Of late I’ve been involved with an exciting new roleplay game over at AncientWorlds–Legacy Hunters. I thought I’d share a bit of a post I did for the game. Sometimes memory is an acid flash burn that scars over and over again.

It had been years, but I could still recall clearly the fight with Erebus.

He’d ambushed us on the outskirts of Cairo, he and his cronies. Draconis had gotten a hot tip on an ancient Egyptian scroll that purported to lead the way to a catacomb with hieroglyphs which hinted at the true origins of Tarot. Not a tip he and I could easily pass up. Closemouthed as usual, Draconis refused to name his source, so I could only follow along and trust that it would pan out.

Our Egyptian agents had agreed to meet us at the Golden Camel restaurant, not a place I was familiar with, though I’d travelled extensively throughout Egypt.

We’d parked a block away and walked down the street till we reached the meeting place, our eyes scanning the street, the passersby, ensuring that nothing looked out of sorts. Knowing we could never be totally certain that all was as it should be. Both armed, we knew we’d be able to handle any situation that might come up.

The two Arcain agents, Cygnus and Lily (married and always partnered in clan business) met us in the foyer. Standing slightly behind them was a short, dark man who’s nervous eyes darted to and fro, making me immediately more on guard than usual. After introductions, our party was lead to a corner table, candlelight flickering softly in the dim light from above. We waited while a waiter brought tall glasses of ice water, eyeing each other patiently.

Cygnus cleared his throat, “This is Husani Abaza. He’ll be guiding us to the ruins at Tell Hisn.”

“Unfortunately, he’s not willing to tell us more until we arrive there,” Lily added, with a slight shrug. I could see the Egyptian shrink into himself in fear, hands wringing each other hard. And I wondered what the hell he was so afraid of.

Draconis was about to respond when I had the itching, tingling sensation between my shoulder blades that always warned me I was being watched. Just as I turned to look behind me, I heard a soft whoosh.

Then it all started going terribly, terribly wrong. Fast.
